Standard I: Teachers Demonstrate Leadership
Element Ia. Teachers lead in their classrooms.
Element Ib. Teachers demonstrate leadership in the school.
Element Ic. Teachers lead the teaching profession.
Element Id. Teachers advocate for schools and students.
For the past 6 years I have been implementing student led conferences in my classroom. This has been a great tool for helping my students to take responsibility for their learning. This year I have also implemented digital student portfolios. Each of my students has a google site where they embed work that they are proud of. This will then serve as their tool to guide their student led conferences. Students end their conferences by looking at the next quarters standards and discusssing what an appropriate goal would be for them to strive for.
I encourage my students to work collaboratively whenever possible. We establish norms at the beginning of the year as a class so that all students are actively involved in the group. I feel that teaching children how to work collaborativley is an essential 21st century skill.
Creating a student centered and student led classroom is a passion of mine.
I try to give students as much responsibility in my classroom as possible. We spend time at the beginning of the year setting up routines, rituals, and procedures to ensure that this can happen in as smooth a fashion as possible. By establishing a student led classroom this leaves me as the teacher better able to facilitiate discussions about misconceptions and deeper understandings about the content being taught.
This past year I have helped to facilitate a school wide book study on Learn Like A Pirate. This book as further my understanding of the importance of having a student led classroom.
I was given the opportunity to present at the 2018 NCTIES Conference in Raleigh, NC. I presented on implementing student inquiry with technology into your classroom. This was a wonderful opportunity for me to take a risk and step out of my comfort zone.
For the past 13 seasons I have been either a Girls on the Run Coach or Site administrator. I am passionate about this program and have gained so much from being a part of it. This has been an amazing opportunity for me to get to know students in the school in a non traditional setting. This has strengethed my relationships with students in the school and has given the girls in the progam another trusted adult in the building to lean on when the need it.
